Clarifying My Vision for a Better World

My task here is to articulate ever more clearly my vision for making the world a better place. See here for an early, simple beta version, and Be the Solution for a deeper and more substantial beta version.

My perception is that there are no adequate visions for making the world a better place that are widely known (do send me links to interesting ones). Marxist communism served as a powerfully motivating, and horribly tragic, vision of a better world for a hundred and fifty years. Since the collapse of communism, for which we should all be grateful, we have nothing.

Real conservatism simply tries to preserve the past. The neo-conservative project of forcing democracy on the world is dead after the Iraq fiasco. Environmentalism simply attempts to prevent environmental destruction, without providing a positive forward vision. Mainstream left-liberals fight for the welfare state, without providing an inspiring case for the fulfillment of their vision. While compared to most libertarians I have a great deal of respect for Scandinavia, the Scandinavian nations are not paradises by any means. Sweden, ranked the first in the world by various measures respected by the left-liberals, is also home to a vibrantly nihilistic death metal movement and has seen a significant increase in gang rapes in the past ten years (the increase has been acknowledged by Amnesty International, others allege that these gang rapes are primarily committed by Muslim immigrants). Techno-optimism doesn’t inspire me; life is all about human relationships, and no matter how many more gadgets and life extensions we have, if we do not have healthy, positive cultures and relationships that make life worth living, why bother?

I believe that these opinions, whether originating from me or from others, are undervalued in the modern world, even given the extraordinary diversity of thought available on the web, and it is valuable to gather together this perspective into one place.

Moreover, that place happens to be the world in which I inhabit in my mind.
